Types of Intrauterine Device (IUD) Used for Birth Control

The Intrauterine Device or IUD, as it is commonly known, is a plastic device that is T-shaped. One form of the device is covered in copper, while the other contains hormones. It is inserted inside the uterus by the doctor and a plastic string is attached towards the end of the device, which will go into the vagina through the cervix. The string is attached to help the doctor to take the IUD out.

The Different Types of IUD

Hormonal IUD

This IUD will release a form of hormone progestin known as levonorgestrel. It is extremely effective in preventing pregnancy and there are 2 types available in the market. One has a life span of 3 years while the other has a life span of 5 years.

Copper IUD

The copper intrauterine device is commonly used for preventing pregnancies and it has a lifespan of around 10 years. It is considered to be one of the most effective and leading forms of contraception today.
